Authentic Masala Chai Recipe | Masala Tea | Chai Masala Powder Recipe| Masala Chai Spice Mix | Tea

Updated: Jan 27, 2023

Indian tea or chai is such a warm, comforting drink we Indians enjoy. It has become popular now in coffee shops, but to have an authentic cup of chai, you need to make it at home!

Here's my version. I do hope you enjoy!

Authentic Chai Masala Tea Recipe Prep Time: 15 minutes (Approx)

Lasts 6 Months (Approx)

CHAI MASALA INGREDIENTS:

  • 1/4 Cup (20g) Whole Cardamom

  • 1/4 Cup (10g) Cinnamon

  • 3 TBSP (30g) Black Peppercorn

  • 2 TBSP ( 10g) Cloves

  • 1 Nutmeg

  • 2 Whole Mace Pieces

  • 3/4 Cup (70g) Ginger Powder

METHOD

Mix all the whole ingredients in a bowl, leaving out the ginger powder.

Microwave for 1-2 minutes on high or until you start to hear popping.

Let the whole spices cool to room temperature.

Grind all the whole spices in a spice or coffee grinder.

Remove the ground spices into a bowl and mix in the ginger powder.

Put the remaining Chai Masala into a dry bottle with a tight lid and store. It should last about 6 months, depending on how much tea you make! Enjoy!

CHAI TEA INGREDIENTS (2 Cups)

  • 1 Cup Water

  • 1 Cup Whole Milk

  • 1/2 tsp Chai Masala

  • Sugar per taste

  • Just less than 2 TBSP Loose Tea Leaves

  • Just less than 1/4 tsp Freshly Ground Ginger (optional)

  • Handful of Lemongrass (optional)

  • Handful of Fresh Mint (optional)

METHOD

In a small pot, add the water, tea leaves, chai masala, sugar, fresh ginger and lemongrass.

Bring it to a boil. Let it boil for 30 seconds to a minute.

Then add the milk and give it a stir.

When the tea is about to come to a boil, add the fresh mint and stir it in for 30 seconds.

Bring it to a boil, then turn off the heat.

Strain the tea into a tea cup or teapot with a fine strainer.

Enjoy hot!
